Alerting emergency services, and providing protection and assistance after an accident: tertiary safety

Launched by PSA Peugeot Citroën in 2003, the emergency call system organises and speeds up the arrival of the emergency services after a road accident. At mid-2006 almost 200,000 Peugeot and Citroën cars were fitted with the system in the seven European countries where the service is available. The Group thus leads the field in Europe in terms of tertiary safety.
In the event of an accident on board a vehicle fitted with the system, or if a person is taken ill, the occupants are connected to a specialised assistance platform, either automatically when an impact is detected or manually if the passengers are able to hold down the emergency button. The assistance service determines the precise location of the vehicle, even if the driver is unconscious. Emergency call-out cuts the arrival time of the emergency services and therefore considerably improves their efficiency (according to European Commission data, if every vehicle were fitted with the system, 2,000 lives could be saved every year in Europe).
In 2005, PSA Peugeot Citroën expanded coverage of the service in Europe. Emergency call-out is now available in seven countries: France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Spain. The Group is the only carmaker to offer the service on almost the entire range of both the Peugeot and Citroën marques.
