Urban mobility: reconciling transport and quality of life

The automobile is an integral part of urban transport. With 70% of Europeans appreciating cars for the flexibility they offer, we are now faced with a two-pronged issue. The automobile has to satisfy an ongoing increase in mobility needs while helping to improve the quality of life in ever larger cities.

For PSA Peugeot Citroën, the challenge of urban transport is all about finding the right balance between the city, quality of life, the need for mobility and individual freedom. This is why it is vital to provide new options and reconcile the use of public and private transport so that each person can make the best possible choices. These proposals include:

- developing new ways of using cars and light commercial vehicles, for transporting people and goods, by encouraging inter-modality and multi-modality.

- optimising urban journeys by working on real-time information for drivers on traffic conditions and strategies for speeding up traffic flows.

Cities on the Move Institute: innovating mobility

To contribute to thinking on the sustainable mobility of people and goods in urban areas, PSA Peugeot Citroën created the six years ago, with the aim of fostering innovative mobility solutions.
Cities on the Move brings together business leaders with researchers, university staff and social, cultural and associative representatives - and with cities themselves - in the context of collaborative research programs and projects.

To develop new proposals, Cities on the Move leads discussions and organises field tests on urban mobility, with the help of stakeholders from a range of disciplines, focusing on three main areas:
- the mobility of individuals and social groups with physical and social difficulties;
- the performance and quality of transport, notably through inter-modality and multi-modality;
- furthering knowledge on mobility, culture and behaviour.

This work has given rise to 10 action plans and field test programmes, including:
- "Mobility for social and professional integration", highlighting the essential role of mobility in social and professional integration.
- "The street belongs to all of us", posing questions about how city dwellers share this urban space.

Encouraging carpooling

PSA Peugeot Citroën also promotes carpooling. Several in-house systems have been introduced at Group sites in France, notably at Vélizy, Trémery, and the Poissy services centre. Other establishments are looking to set up similar systems for their employees. Since 1999, PSA Peugeot Citroën has supported the "Voiture & Co" association, which offers carpooling services for young people, especially after parties.

Improving traffic information

Better information is also a key factor in improving traffic flow. The use of leading-edge communications technologies significantly improves traffic control and safety (roadwork, traffic jams, traffic flow, etc.). PSA Peugeot Citroën is taking part in the development of this technology through traffic information and more communicative vehicles.
