PSA Peugeot Citroën deepens expertise in zero emission vehicles as partner in StorHy, the european hydrogen storage program
Over the past ten years, the PSA Peugeot Citroën research division has tested several hydrogen storage solutions through the development of seven technology demonstrators running on hydrogen fuel cells.
Based on these tests, the Group believes that “range extender” type hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are a promising medium and long-term solution for zero emission vehicles (ZEV) requiring a longer range than electric vehicles.
This approach is illustrated by the Peugeot Partner H2Origin demonstrator, rolled out in April.
However, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are still a long way from the technical and economic maturity needed to support mass-market production.
PSA Peugeot Citroën is therefore pursuing targeted partnerships – such as the one with French atomic energy commission CEA on fuel cells – and participating in major European Commission research projects, in a commitment to maintaining its leadership in the potentially disruptive technologies that could accelerate the advent of hydrogen vehicles.
Through the EU’s Hydrogen Storage Systems for Automotive Application (StorHy) research project, PSA Peugeot Citroën has focused on improving liquid hydrogen storage technology, in order to significantly increase the range of hydrogen vehicles. Test results from this project show that doubling the pressure of the stored hydrogen (from 350 to 700 bar) is a technically viable solution.
PSA Peugeot Citroën’s participation in the integrated StorHy project reflects the Group’s commitment to European research efforts that are already exploring long-term solutions for vehicles with zero CO2 emissions.
StorHy, an integrated EU project
Hydrogen storage is one of the keys to the use of hydrogen as a source of energy and to the widespread market availability of hydrogen-powered vehicles.
The European StorHy project has led to significant progress in the development of effective on-board hydrogen storage systems, while enhancing the competitiveness of European industry and fostering top-level scientific and technical exchanges across Europe on various hydrogen storage solutions.
During the four and a half years of the StorHy project, leading manufacturers and research organizations teamed up to advance the state-of-the-art and accelerate the development of the three main technologies being studied for hydrogen storage: in gaseous form under high pressure (up to 700 bar, in liquid form at very low (cryogenic) temperatures (minus 253°C), or in “solid” form (absorbed in solid materials).
The technologies developed as part of StorHy for high-pressure gaseous or cryogenic liquid storage are now ready for further development in small-scale production.
For the moment, solid storage is not sufficiently mature to be considered for an automotive application.
Coordinated by Magna Styer, the StorHy project involves a consortium of five major auto manufacturers (BMW, Daimler, Ford, PSA Peugeot Citroën and Volvo), 14 equipment manufacturers and 15 leading European research organizations. The project received €10.7 million in funding through the EU’s 6th R&D Framework Program and had a total budget of €18.7 million.
The Final Event for the StorHy program will be hosted by PSA Peugeot Citroën at its Armand Peugeot Forum in Poissy on June 3 and 4, 2008. During the forum, the StorHy consortium will review the project’s technical achievements and present the outlook for hydrogen storage to an audience of international experts.
